Kousa Dogwood

Also known as Japanese flowering dogwood, this tree is a native of China, Japan, and Korea. White flowers appear in May and June, and the leaves turn purple and scarlet in fall.

The fruit is similar to a large raspberry, and the seeds are eaten by birds and squirrels. It is more cold hardy and disease resistant than our native flowering dogwood. This disease-resistant variety was planted in the 1990s to replace an American dogwood that suffered from anthracnose.
