Norway Maple
Norway Maple
Acer platinoides - #17
This tree is native to Europe, where it is used for timber. Here it is primarily planted as an ornamental thanks to its beautifully symmetrical crown and dark green foliage, which turns pale yellow in the fall. It is a fast-growing shade tree, tolerant of city smoke and dust. The leaves are similar in shape to those of sugar maple but are a deeper green, and their stems secrete a milky sap. Cornelia had planted an allee of Norway maples along the lower drive, but due to problems caused by their non-native status and shallow root system, they were replaced with hardier native sugar maples.
